Ionthas along with the other 21 gods were created by the High God in order to carry out his plan of oversee mortals in their evolution.
Ionthas was chief among the shapers of the material world and was more powerful than any of his brethren. Among his most notable creations being the astral dragons, Deion and Procene.
As the gods shaped the world according to the plan set forth by the High God, Ionthas' pride grew and he eventually declared himself the true deity and usurper of the High God. When opposed by some of the other gods, he set his rage upon Krynn by undoing the work of his kin and reshaping it to his will. Ionthas came to the realization that he could only reshape what already existed and could not create anything new, unlike the High God. This realization unleashed unseen hatred towards everything that was not himself. Ionthas even abandoned his original name and took the title he is more commonly known as in Dragonlance literature: Chaos.
The opposition against Chaos was heralded by Paladine, the greatest among the Gods of Light and the most faithful to the High God. Paladine was granted the strength that was required to defeat and bind his brother. Chaos/Ionthas had power sufficient enough to defeat the other 21 gods but was thwarted by Paladine and cast into a void. While in this void Chaos began to slip into insanity, denying the existence of the High God and convincing himself that he was the ultimate creator.
This victory was not without a cost, there was siginificant damage to the work of the other gods and the seeds of rebellion were sown. Takhisis, who was given the title of co-regent by the High God, was infected with Chaos' megalomaniacal pride. Against the will of the High God she had no intention of sharing Krynn with her brother and fellow co-regent, Paladine. Takhisis managed to lure a few more gods to her side giving rise to the gods of darkness. The gods who chose neither to oppose the will of the High God nor to aid became the gods of neutrality. The gods who supported the will of the High God became the gods of light.
Paladine is the chief of the Gods of Light and the creator of the Elves. He is also the patron of the Knights of Solamnia, specifically the Order of The Rose. His colors are Silver and White and he influences the orders of , hope, light, rulership and guardianship, as well as law, wards, thought, and war. His earthly avatars include the Platinum Dragon and the muddled old wizard, Fizban.
Paladine is elder brother to Takhisis and Gilean. He and Mishakal are the parents of the gods Kiri-Jolith, Habbakuk, and Solinari.
Fizban "The Fabulous" is secretly the mortal avatar of Paladine. Though he is wise and powerful, he diguises his true purpose in the form of a clumsy and absent-minded wizard.
During the Chronicles Trilogy, Paladine helped the Heroes of the Lance indirectly through Fizban. The kender Tasslehoff Burrfoot, one of the heroes, also became a close friend of Fizban.
Weis and Hickman later introduced a similar character in the Death Gate Cycle named Zifnab, and in The Mantle of Kendis-Dai named Zanfib. Both names are anagrams of Fizban. (switch around the letters in the name)
